Adobe Commerce
Adobe Commerce customization cost: what actually drives it
There is no honest price list for this work. The cost depends on your hosting model, what the store already contains, and how far the change reaches. Here is what moves it, and how to get a number you can use.

Why two quotes can be so far apart
Picture a request to add a field to checkout and send it to your ERP. On a clean store with a documented integration, that is a small module. On a store with a third-party checkout, a modified order flow and an ERP connector nobody has the source for, most of the budget goes on finding out what happens today.
A low quote and a high quote can both be sincere. The low one may have assumed the clean version. When you compare them, ask each supplier what they assumed about your existing code, and whether the price changes if that is wrong.
The drivers, and what to bring for each
| Driver | Why it moves the work | What to bring |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting model | On-premises and Commerce on Cloud run PHP modules in-process. Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service builds custom logic out of process, with App Builder, webhooks and events. | Your hosting type and whether a move is planned |
| Mechanism needed | A plugin that adjusts one method is a different size of job from a new service contract, Web API and GraphQL module. | The change, described as business behaviour |
| Existing customization | Core overrides, and modules that other modules depend on, have to be read before anything is changed safely. | Repository access, or a list of custom modules |
| Third-party extensions | Your change has to coexist with each one, and some may already touch the same methods. | The output of composer show, or your extension list |
| Integrations | Sync with an ERP or CRM brings field mapping, retries, conflict rules and a record of what failed. The other system's API sets many of the limits. | Names and versions of the systems, plus API documents |
| Storefront | Luma, a headless front end and Edge Delivery Services each need different work. On the Cloud Service, Luma isn't supported. | A link to the storefront and its theme details |
| Tests and environments | Without tests or a usable staging copy, someone has to check flows by hand, and that time is part of the cost. | What tests exist and how staging is refreshed |
| Target version | If the store needs an upgrade first, the change may need to be built twice or the work sequenced around it. | Your version from bin/magento --version |
The cost after launch
A custom module is something you carry to every later release, and that is the part cheap quotes tend to leave out. Adobe’s upgrade guide lists customizations, extension count, integrations, testing strategy and adherence to best practice among the factors in upgrade effort. Adobe also recommends upgrading with each patch release cycle, so you meet that cost repeatedly.
That is why we use the lightest mechanism that does the job. Configuration before code, a plugin before a replaced class, and an out-of-process app where that keeps logic clear of the core. Our version and support matrix shows how soon your current line needs that attention.
How to get a usable number
- Write the change as what the business needs to happen, not as a technical solution.
- Collect your version, hosting type, extension list and a list of connected systems.
- Ask for an assessment. We review the version, hosting, installed extensions and custom code, and read the core overrides that make later work hard.
- You get the module list with the approach for each one, what can be configured instead of built, and a price for that scope.
If you would rather add hands to your own team, dedicated developers are available from ~$2,200 to ~$5,400 a month by seniority (160 h per month, retainer discount), and hiring an Adobe Commerce developer explains how that works. Most of our work is delivered under NDA, so many projects cannot be named. We have no published Adobe Commerce case study here.
Questions
Why don't you publish a price range for Adobe Commerce work?
Because we couldn't back one up. The same request can be a small plugin on one store and a long job on another, depending on what is already customized. A range without those details would be a guess, and it would still be wrong for your store.
What are your developer rates for this work?
Developers start from $20/h, invoiced in USD, GBP, EUR or INR. That is a rate, not a project estimate, and the hours depend on the drivers on this page.
Does this include the Adobe Commerce licence?
No. Licensing is between you and Adobe, and we don't quote it. Magento Open Source has no licence fee, but it lacks features such as the B2B suite, which can change what you need to build.
Will customization make upgrades more expensive?
Usually, yes, and how much depends on how it was built. Adobe's upgrade guide names customizations, extension count, third-party integrations, testing strategy and whether code follows best practice as factors in upgrade effort.
